One of the [[:Category:88_IAU-Constellations|88 IAU constellations]]. Originally, it depicted the Mesopotamian god Pabilsaĝ ([[PA.BIL.SAG]]), a god of agriculture and war, later equated with Ninurta and depicted as a mixed creature of a human body attaced to horse body with wings and an additional scorpion tail. This complex image was simplified in Greek reception, and there drawn as a centaur.

==Etymology and History==
[[File:Pabilsag, ancêtre mésopotamien du Sagittaire,.jpg|thumb|profile of the figure of Pabilsag from a 12th century BCE kudurru. è.c. (Roland Laffitte 2023)]]

===Origin of Constellation<ref name=":0">Hoffmann, Susanne M. Wie der Löwe an den Himmel kam. Franckh Kosmos Verlag, Stuttgart 2021</ref>===
This figure came to Greek culture from Mesopotamia as a zodiac sign. Since MUL.APIN, it has been called Pabilsang ([[PA.BIL.SAG]]). This is a deity depicted as a hybrid creature: a male upper body sits on a horse's body, which has a scorpion's tail and wings. Pabilsang is equated with Ninurta, a god of agriculture and war. This explains why he holds a bow and arrow – either for hunting or for defence.

Such a hybrid creature was unknown to the Greeks. The most similar creature in Greek culture and mythology is a centaur, which at least combines horse and human (although it does not have a scorpion's tail and wings). However, Eratosthenes questions whether this is a centaur: He has illustrations in which the archer has only two legs – horse legs. For this reason, and because centaurs cannot use bows and arrows, Eratosthenes prefers the opinion that this is the satyr Krotos, the son of the nurse of the Muses. He is considered a cultural founder, having invented the bow and arrow and used it to hunt animals.

Eratosthenes' belief that Sagittarius has a ship with him also points to a Babylonian influence and an accidental equation of the two-legged and four-legged figures. The Babylonian constellation Ship ([[MA2.GUR8|MA2.GUR8]]) refers to a river boat and must have been located near Sagittarius. Based on depictions of Babylonian river boats, the constellation [[Corona Australis]] is usually equated with the Babylonian ship. However, centaurs do not travel on ships, which is why, according to Eratosthenes, the ship is another argument against the centaur.

Eratosthenes' claim that Sagittarius is bipedal may seem surprising at first, as today he is depicted as a four-legged centaur in all common star charts.

The Almagest mentions three feet, a horse's body and a human torso, from which we can conclude that Ptolemy also thought of Sagittarius as a centaur. So how did Eratosthenes come to the conclusion that it could be a man with horse's legs?

On the zodiac of Dendera, a depiction in an Egyptian temple that was restored in the Ptolemaic period in the 1st century (i.e. only about 100 to 150 years after Eratosthenes), there are two Sagittarians: one with two legs and one with four legs. The four-legged one is in the part of the sky where the constellation Sagittarius is located. The two-legged archer stands next to the star [[Sirius]]. This is significant in that [[Sirius]] and the stars around it formed the two Babylonian constellations ‘Arrow’ ([[KAK.SI.SA2|KAK.SI.SA]]) and ‘Bow’ ([[PAN]]). The strong Babylonian influences are not surprising here, as there is evidence of a significant transfer of Babylonian mathematical astronomy to Greek astronomy in Egypt, especially in the 2nd century BCE.
===== Aratus =====
<blockquote>[300] After much suffering at sea even in the previous month, when the sun inflames the bow and the Drawer of the bow, you should put ashore in the evening and not continue to trust the night. A sign of that season and that month will be the rising of the Scorpion at the end of night. [305] The Archer actually draws his great bow near the sting; the rising Scorpion stands a little ahead of him, and he then rises shortly after. At that time the head of Cynosura runs very high up at the end of night, and just before dawn Orion sets entirely, and Cepheus from hand to waist. (Kidd 1997)</blockquote>
Pamias and Zucker (2013,<ref>Pamìas, Jordi und Zucker, Arnaud (2013). Ératosthènes de Cyrène: Catastérrismes, Belles Lettres, Paris</ref> 85-87)<blockquote>'''Var. 1 (Περὶ τοῦ Τοξότου)''': This is the figure holding the bow, whom most people regard as a centaur, though others dispute this, arguing that no centaur uses a bow; he is indeed a man, but with horse’s legs and a tail like that of the satyrs. The Archer has two stars on his head, one on his right elbow, one on his hands, one shining on his stomach, two on his back, one on his front knee, one on his foot, one on his back knee, one on his hoof, two on the bow and one on the sheepskin. Fourteen.</blockquote><blockquote>'''Var. 2 (Τοξότου)''': This is the Archer whom most people regard as a Centaur, a view contested by others, who argue that he is not shown with four legs, but is standing and shooting a bow; yet no Centaur has ever used a bow; he is indeed a man, but with horse’s legs and a tail like that of the Satyrs. This is why it seems implausible to the people in question that he is a Centaur, and more likely that he is Crotos (Clapping), the son of Euphemia (Renown), the nurse of the Muses, who lived and stayed on Helicon.</blockquote><blockquote>The Muses ensured that he discovered the use of the bow and could obtain his food from wild beasts, as Sositheus relates. He had become intimately acquainted with the Muses and attended their performances, and he approved of them by marking the beat with cheers.</blockquote><blockquote>Indeed, he would clap his hands to mark the off-beat of their singing; so, seeing him do this, the other men began to do the same. That is why the Muses, when they tasted the charm of fame, thanks to his support, asked Zeus to reveal to all the fervour of this figure, and thus he was placed amongst the constellations, in recognition of that hand gesture he had made, adopting the posture of the archer as his distinctive mark. His gesture was perpetuated amongst men. Furthermore, the presence of the Boat indicates that he will be visible to everyone: not only to men on land, but also to those at sea; hence the error of those who depict him as a Centaur.</blockquote><blockquote>The Archer has two stars on his head, two on the bow, two on the tip of the arrow, one on his right elbow, one on his hand, one shining on his belly, two on his back, one on his tail, one on the front knee, one on the hoof, and one on the back knee. Fifteen in all.</blockquote><blockquote>The seven stars of the Boat are located beneath his paw. They resemble hind legs, but the latter are not visible at all.</blockquote>
===== Hyginus, Astronomica =====
<blockquote>Many have called this sign the Centaurus; others deny the name, for the reason that no Centaurus makes use of arrows. The question is raised, too why he is formed with horse flanks but a Satyr's tail.

Some say that he is Crotus, son of Eupheme, nurse of the Muses. As Sositheus, writer of tragedies, says, he had his home on Mount Helicon and took his pleasure in the company of the Muses, sometimes even following the pursuit of hunting. He attained great fame for his diligence, for he was very swift in the woods, and clever in the arts. As a reward for his zeal the Muses asked Jove to represent him in some star group, and Jove did so. Since he wished to display all his skills in one body, he gave him horse flanks because he rode a great deal. He added arrows, since these would show both his keenness and his swiftness, and he gave him a Satyr's tail because the Muses took no less pleasure in Crotus than Liber did in the Satyrs. Before his feet are a few stars arranged in a circle, which some said were a wreath, thrown off as by one at play. (Mary Ward 1960)</blockquote>
==Mythology==
Eratosthenes<ref name=":0" /> tells us that the satyr Krotos watched the Muses playing and then clapped his hands in rapturous delight. Others followed suit, and thus applause after a musical performance was invented. For this non-verbal sign of appreciation, he was transported to heaven.

This is a beautiful star legend, but it does not explain why this hybrid creature is holding a bow and arrow. The story demonstrates once again the Greeks' perplexity with images from a foreign (Babylonian) culture.
Telum, The Dart, is a modern star name adopted by the International Astronomical Union in the IAU-Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN). Its origin is Latin. It is the name of the star γ Sge in constellation [[Sagitta]].

==Concordance, Etymology, History==

The name occurs as name or name variant of the classical constellation [[Sagitta]] apparently for the entire last millennium. Prominent mentions are the label in the first printed star map in history, the map by A. Dürer 1515, who used "Telum" as a constellation label.

Bayer (1603) in his Uranometria, which set a nomenclature standard for stars that is still used, gave "Telum" at least as an alternative. <gallery>
</gallery>

==Mythology==

In modern popculture Star Trek: "Telum is a star system near the borders of the Federation, Klingon Empire and the Romulan Star Empire, located in the galaxy's Sagittarius Arm, somewhere in the space of the Alpha or Beta Quadrants."

==IAU Working Group on Star Names==
The name was suggested to the IAU WGSN in 2026 for the brightest star of the constellation in order to make its transformation from a huge Greek arrow (almost a spear) to a small Roman dart obvious. On the ancient Greek arrow, two gods could take seat, but the constellation as seen today is tiny. The name Telum, the Dart, has been a name variant in many historical maps and star catalogs of the past millennium, although the constellation itself is more than one millennium older.

The name Telum was adopted by the IAU WGSN on 18 June 2026 for the star γ Sge.
==Concordance, Etymology, History==
Ru is an Oceanic name from Bali (Indonesia), where it used until today for a cultural calendar that helps determining best times for seasonal activities like agriculture, sailing, hunting specific animals, and also for religious purposes in Balinese Hinduism and local belief.

It is attested in a series called Palelintangan that has been in use on the islands of Java and Bali from ~700 CE on, when first settlers came from India and brought Hinduism as religion, Sanskrit as writing form and other cultural goods from Eurasia. In the local traditions on the tropical islands, this was merged with Oceanic knowledge, which gave birth to the traditional Palelintangan.
Pagru, The Dead Man or Corpse, is a modern star name adopted by the International Astronomical Union in the IAU-Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN). Its origin is Akkadian. It is the name of the star η Aql in constellation [[Aquila]].

==Concordance, Etymology, History==

The Sumerian/ Akkadian constellation [[AD6|AD6]] is attested since the middle of the 2nd millennium BCE. MUL.APIN is typically dated "before 1000 BCE" (Hunger and Steele 2019).<ref name=":3">Hunger, H. and J. M. Steele (2019). The Babylonian Astronomical Compendium MUL.APIN, Routledge, NY</ref>

=== Origin ===
'''MUL.APIN (I ii 12).<ref name=":3" />''' In the list of asterisms of the god Anu it is written:

* <sup>mul</sup> <sup>d</sup>Za-ba<sub>4</sub>-ba<sub>4</sub> <sup>mul</sup>TI<sub>8</sub><sup>mušen</sup> u <sup>mul</sup>AD<sub>6</sub>

* "The star of Zababa, the Eagle, and the Corpse."

The Corpse is apparently part of the super-constellation of (god) Zababa with Eagle and Corpse, because this text follows the schema of an explanatory list which associates deities and constellations. The Eagle is in [[Aquila]] and the Zababa in modern [[Ophiuchus]]. The Corpse is located in the area next to Aquila. Scholars have suggested positions in the eastern parts of Aql and in Del.

=== Re-Use ===
As the suggested positions in eastern or east of Aquila almost coincide with the Almagest asterism of [[Antinous]] whose stars are well-described by coordinates, it has been suspected that Ptolemy used this Mesopotamian constellation as a template to create the new (political) asterism. At that time, in the 2nd century CE, with early Christianity and Egyptian belief in life after death, it is plausible that the Eagle in Aquila carries the Dead Man (or his soul) to the stars.

==Mythology==

==IAU Working Group on Star Names==
The name Pagru was discussed and adopted by the IAU WGSN in June 2026. According to the Almagest, Antinous has two stars in his head: η and θ Aquilae; θ Aql was named Antinous in 2024. It was suggested in 2023 to name η Aql after the Mesopotamian predecessor "Pagru".

Decision: Pagru was adopted to the IAU-CSN as name for η Aql on 18 June 2026.
Shakh, The Pig, is a modern star name adopted by the International Astronomical Union in the IAU-Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN). Its origin is Sumerian. It is the name of the star β Sge in constellation [[Sagitta]].

The Sumerian term ŠAḪ (Akkadian ''šaḫu'')<ref>[[Mesopotamian (All Terms)|Planetarium Babylonicum 2.0]], All Skies Encyclopaedia.</ref> is an ancient Mesopotamian constellation. It is described in the first known astronomical compandium, MUL.APIN, whose first sections date to the time between 1350 and 1150 BCE (other parts might be younger) and which was used through the entire first millennium BCE.

'''MUL.APIN (I i 29),''' the list of asterisms of the god Enlil, describes the Pig next to the (well-positioned) asterism of mul[[UD.KA.DU8.A|UD.KA.DU8.A]]

Hence, it is well known that it is in the area of modern Vulpecula and Sagitta. As the two similarly bright stars α and β Sge may easily cause the visual association with a pig's nose, the name was suggested to be applied to one of these two.
Gǔ Qí (Drum Flag, 鼓旗) is a Chinese asterism consisting of nine stars located in the modern constellation ''[[Aquila]]''. It originated no later than about 100 BCE and lies to the right of ''Hé Gǔ'' (Drum at the River, 河鼓).
== Concordance, Etymology, History ==
Drums and Flags were instruments used by ancient armies to transmit signals and direct combat. The ''Sunzi bingfa'' (''Art of War'', 孫子兵法) states:<blockquote>[[File:Gong-and-Drum Flag illustration from the 1621 (Tianqi 1) engraved edition of the Wubei zhi (AI-enhanced and annotated).png|thumb|'''Fig 1. Gong-and-Drum Flag illustration from the 1621 (Tianqi 1) printed edition of the ''Wubei zhi'' (AI-enhanced and annotated)''']]“The ''Military Regulations'' says: ‘If speech cannot be heard, use (metal) gongs and drums; if sight cannot reach, use banners and flags.’ Gongs and drums, banners and flags, are the means by which people’s eyes and ears are unified. When the troops are unified, the brave cannot advance alone and the timid cannot retreat alone—this is the method of employing the masses. Therefore, night battles rely on gongs and drums, and day battles on banners and flags, thereby transforming the soldiers’ senses.”[[File:Shang-dynasty bronze drum with divine-figure motif, in the collection of the Sen-oku Hakukokan Museum, Japan.jpg|thumb|'''Fig 2. The drum was not merely a musical instrument but a military command device and a means of encouraging morale: drums signaled attack, whereas metal gongs signaled withdrawal or defensive formation(Fig. 1). Archaeological proof indicates that drums had already existed at least by the Shang Dynasty (Fig. 2).

In Sima Qian(145 or 135 BCE - ?)’s ''Tianguan shu'' (''Book of Heaven Officials'', 天官書), only ''Hegu'' is mentioned and not the Flag, suggesting that the latter was added later. The name ''Gu-Qi'' implies a close association with ''Hegu'', and the Shi school treated the two as a related group of asterisms. However, ''Guqi'' was renamed ''Youqi'' (Right Flag, 右旗) in later times to maintain symmetry since the Gan school introduced the asterism ''[[Zuoqi]]'' (Left Flag, 左旗).

Ancient banners differed significantly from modern ones and were divided into multiple categories. In the pre-Qin (before 220 BCE) period, nine types were distinguished. The ''Zhōu lǐ'' (''Rites of Zhou'', 周禮) describes a system of nine banners (''jiǔ qí''):

(1) ''Cháng''常 (bearing the sun and moon),

(2) ''Qí''旂 (with intertwined dragons),

(3) ''Zhān''旜 (plain silk banner),

(4) ''Wù''物 (variegated silk),

(5) ''Qí''旗 (with bears and tigers),

(6) ''Yú''旟 (with birds),

(7) ''Zhào''旐 (with tortoise and serpent),

(8) ''Suì'' 旞 (with full feathers),

(9) ''Jīng'' (with split feathers)

The Han dynasty(202 BCE - 220 CE) system may have differed somewhat. Structurally, the “''Qí''旗” consisted of a pole (''gān''竿), the main cloth panel (''shān''縿), a long streamer (''yóu''斿) attached at the top , and a serrated fringe along the side edge. <ref>Sun Ji孙机. === Identification of stars ===
In contrast to the bright and stable asterism Hegu, whose identification never changed, ''Guqi (Drum Flag)or Youqi'' (Right Flag) underwent several revisions. Nevertheless, it consistently included δ Aquilae as its most bright star and sometimes the determinative star.
== IAU Working Group on Star Names ==
In 2026, the name of the historical constellation Gǔ Qí (Drum Flag, 鼓旗), which is also called ''Youqi'' (Right Flag, 右旗), was suggested to be used for one of the stars in this constellation. Guqi ''(Drum Flag)or Youqi'' (Right Flag) underwent several revisions, nevertheless, it consistently included Delta Aquilae as its most bright star and sometimes the determinative star (There is an observed coordinate from 1052CE, in the middle picture of row 4 in the gallary above). So it is the best star for this constellation. If not available, mu Aquilae could be an alternative.

Decision: The IAU adopted the name Guqi for δ Aql on 18 June 2026.
=== Origin of Constellation ===
Llamas figure prominently in many aspects of Inka culture and this celestial figure was thought to animate the llamas on the Earth. Yaqana is a constellation much larger than Hanpatu or Yutu and dominates the Inkas’ dark constellation section of the Milky Way. Yaqana is situated between Centaurus and Scorpius. The prominent stars α and β Centauri serve as the llama’s eyes and as such are known as ''Llamacñawin'', the “eyes of the llama.” Below Yaqana is a smaller dark constellation called Uñallamacha that is said to be a cria, a baby llama, suckling its mother.

These constellations are two of the dark constellations. According to oral traditions in the Qosqo area, Yaqana’s eyes (llamaqñawin) were Alpha and Beta Centauri, and Yaqana (a llama) with a long neck is swimming in a river of stars. It is easy to look the sky and see the constellation and also see the baby llama that breastfeeding.

This celestial figure was thought to animate llamas on the Earth and has strong significance in Inka culture.

==== Identifications ====
Jiàn Tái (Clepsydra Terrace, 渐台), Chinese constellation consists of 4 stars, belongs to the Ox (Niu) Lunar Mansion from the Gan school, and corresponds to the modern constellation [[Lyra]]. Jiantai is a terrace built near water, used for observing sundials, timing with water clocks, and establishing pitch pipes and temperaments. It is a symbol of astronomical timekeeping and musical pitch calibration.

Since 2026, Jiantai is also a modern star name for Delta2 Lyrae.
[[File:China histSundial as waterbassin.jpg|thumb|China: historical sundial as water bassin (Dengfeng).]]

A platform with four square sides is called 'tai' (台); if it has water below, it is called 'jian' (渐). Jiantai governs the gnomon, the water clock, and the affairs of pitch pipes and temperaments. ''Ganshi Zan'' (甘氏赞) says:<blockquote>Jiantai guards the water clock and the gnomon.</blockquote>''Gande'' (甘德) said:<blockquote>Jiantai is in charge of guarding the water clock, and calamities, as well as the Nine Regions (Jiuzhou) and their corresponding field allocations.</blockquote>Jiantai is also "the courtyard where thousands of essences gather". Anomalies in different seasons correspond respectively to warfare (spring), funerals (summer), famine and floods (autumn), and banditry and punishments (winter). It is a constellation that ancient people observed to foretell national fortunes by watching the celestial seasons.
Elieli is a Micronesian star name, recorded on the island of Ifalik (Federated States of Micronesia). It is attested only since the middle of the 20th century, but is still in use.

==Concordance, Etymology, History==

'''Possible meaning'''

The meaning (if any) of Elieli in Woleaian, the indigenous language spoken in Ifalik, is unclear but the phonetically similar modern term "Eleeligu" (double “e” now signifying long “i”) is a type of taro grown in the central Carolines.

'''Concordance & Identification'''

The name Elieli for a [navigators'] guiding star<ref>Johnson, Rubellite K., John K. Mahelona, and Clive Ruggles (2026). ''Nā Inoa Hōkū: Hawaiian and Pacific Star Names'' (3rd edition). Honolulu: University of Hawai‘i Press. p. 414.</ref> was recorded on Ifalik by ethnographers Edwin Burrows and Melford Spiro, who spent six months on the island in 1947–48. It appears in a manuscript held in the Human Relations Area Files database (https://hraf.yale.edu/) and published as a book in 1953,<ref name=":0">Burrows, Edwin G. and Melford E. Spiro (1953). ''An Atoll Culture: Ethnography of Ifaluk in the Central Carolines''. New Haven, CT: Human Relations Area Files.</ref> hereinafter “BS53”. On p. 97, they give its possible identification as either [[Algedi]] (α Cap) or '''ε Lep''', based on azimuth calculations by Maud Makemson. Makemson does not, however, list the term in her star list in her book ''The Morning Star Rises'',<ref name=":1">Makemson, Maud M. (1941). ''The Morning Star Rises''. New Haven: Yale University Press.</ref> which is restricted to Polynesia.

The name may well, however, be a variant of Eliel, or Ēlluel, other variants of which are widely recorded in the central Caroline Islands. If so, it likely referred to Orion’s belt.

=== How was this identification obtained? ===
[[File:Burrows+Spiro1953 fig16.png|thumb|Ifalik “star chart”, after Burrows and Spiro 1953<ref name=":0" />:94, fig. 16. Names outside the circle are those of stars used in navigation, shown at their relative rising and setting positions around the compass.]]

The ethnographer Burrows produced a “star chart” showing the rising (''tagali'') and setting (''tubuwuli'') positions of various Ifalik navigation stars (see figure, after BS53 fig. 16) with the aid of a native informant, “Tom”, as follows:<blockquote>“Fig. 16 shows the positions of the stars used for navigation in Ifaluk [sic] ... Tom gave them to me [Burrows] from memory, but with a compass before us; and I wrote them down on sheets of paper with circles drawn on them like those in Fig. 16, marked to show the points of the compass. ... He approved it, and at times supervised my notations closely, so far as directions are concerned.” (BS53<ref name=":0" />:93) </blockquote>'''Further explanation of the caption to the star chart:'''

* ''Taga'' means “rises” and
* ''Tubwu'' means “sets”,
* ''li'' being the definite article.
* Horizontal lines indicate the paths of of the stars across the sky. Inside the circle, the two words in parentheses indicate the most clearly conceived cardinal directions: ''Ievang'' (north) and ''Iauru'' (south).
* Names inside the circle and not in parentheses are those of islands or reefs said to be reached by steering for the rising or setting points on the same radial line.

The account continues: "To identify the stars with names used in our astronomy, Dr Maud W. Makemson of Vassar College, a pioneer in what might be called ethnoastronomy,* kindly responded to an appeal for help. She computed the azimuths of the stars located by Tom according to points on the compass, and identified them as nearly as possible from such rough data. Later, Dr Ward H. Goodenough sent a copy of his “Native astronomy in the central Carolines”<ref name=":2">Goodenough, Ward H. (1953). ''Native Astronomy in the Central Carolines''. Philadelphia: American Philosophical Society.</ref>, which shows that the native system is, or was, the same throughout what he calls the Central Carolines Language Area. He has worked out an identification applicable to the whole area. ... Where [, as here, Makemson and Goodenough] disagree, the author of this report is quite incompetent to judge where the difficulty lies, beyond the obvious conclusions that it is a matter of inadequate data." (BS53<ref name=":0" />:95)

<nowiki>*</nowiki>This, by the way, appears to be the earliest reference to the term, appearing many years before Baity 1973<ref>Baity, Elizabeth C. (1973). “Archaeoastronomy and ethnoastronomy so far”, ''Current Anthropology'', 14, 389-449.</ref>, which is usually quoted.
An asterism representing an adze handle known in the Polynesian outlier island of Kapingamarangi. It is formed of [[Vega]] (α Lyr), δ, ε, and ζ Lyr (Johnson, Mahelona and Ruggles 2026:<ref>Johnson, Rubellite K, John K.
Since 2026, Kautoki is also a modern star name for ζ1 Lyr; the companion ζ1 Lyr is named [[Urquchillay]].

==Concordance, Etymology, History==
[[File:Kautoki stellarium hi.png|thumb|the asterism of Kautoki sketched above a Stellarium map]]
'''Variants'''

* Kautoki
* Gautogi

The American anthropologist Kenneth Emory conducted an expedition to Kapingamarangi in 1947, during which he recorded 28 star names confirmed to him by, and identified with the help of, the informant “King David” (Emory 1965:<ref name=":0">Emory, Kenneth P. (1965). ''Kapingamarangi: Social and Religious Life of a Polynesian Atoll''. Honolulu: Bernice P. Bishop Museum (Bulletin 228).</ref> 341–343). Amongst these is ''Kautoki'' (#14).

According to Emory, the name means handle (''kau'') of the adze (''toki''), and is formed of α, δ, ε, and ζ Lyr. However, he then states that Vega (α, Lyr) is the head of the adze, δ Lyr and ζ Lyr the handle, and ε Lyr the point of the blade. He adds that it (i.e., the asterism) is also called ''Me-mua'', meaning the “thing in front”, a synonym for adze.

The asterism had been identified earlier (in 1910) by the German ethnographer Anneliese Eilers (1934:<ref>Eilers, Anneliese (1934). ''Inseln um Ponape''. In series Georg Thilenius (ed.), ''Ergebnisse der Südsee–Expedition'' ''1908–10'', sect. II, pt. B, vol. 8 (#23 of 30 vols., 1917–38). Hamburg: L. Friederichsen.</ref> 143 #15), who named it ''Gautogi'' but mistakenly identified it as Polaris. Emory (1910) mentions in the first paragraph on p. 341 that it was [Paul] Hambruch who did the fieldwork on Kapingamarangi in 1910, not Eilers herself.

=== Origin of Constellation ===
[[File:Emory 1965 p. 343 Kautoki hi.jpg|thumb|Kautoki described in Emory (1965, 343). ]]
Kautoki is a weather sign asterism: it was believed to be the "maker of wind".
[[File:Emory 1965 p. 342 hi.jpg|thumb|List of asterism names in Emory (1965, 342), Kautoki highlighted.]]

Emory (1965,<ref name=":0" /> 341-342): <blockquote>Hambruch, in 1910, learned the names of 26 star or constellations (Eilers, 1934, p. 142 ) . His informant drew a rectangular horizon in the and, setting 26 little stones around it (7 along each side) , and gave each stone a name representing a star or constellation. Evidently this is a method for enumerating the tar used al o in the Carolines (Eilers, 1934, p. 142 ). The informant then made an attempt to show the position of these stars in the sky, by rearranging the stones. </blockquote><blockquote>The following 11 star and constellation names and their locations are known generally at present: Matariki , Unu, Taranga, Romoi, Harapori, Meremere, '''Kautoki''' , Mairap(a), Ti Kumat(e) , Pukute(a), and Ti Hetu-naniu. King David, however, knew 28 names and the locations of nearly all. He knew all the name in Hambruch's Iist except two ( No. 12, "ta moro," which I believe is the name me muri of King David, and No. 16, "go ixolii"). He was able to point out to me a ll tho e fo r which he knew the location and which were in the night sky during September, and I identified most of these from star charts I had with me.

...

14. '''Kautoki''' (No. 15).Vega and also Epsilon, Zeta, and Delta in Lyra. Kautoki means adz (toki) handle (kau). The point of the bblade is Epsilon; the handle is formed by Zeta and Delta. It is also called Me-mua, meaning "thing in front," a synonym for adz. (...)

...</blockquote>Emory gives no drawings.
[[File:Eilers 1934 p142 drawings.jpg|thumb|drawings in the sand for star positions according to Eilers (1934 p142)]]
The text also mentions a "drawing in the sand" which appears to be some form of star compass, which was then adjusted to show the positions of the stars in the sky. Eilers does show these at the bottom of p. 142. However, the star positions in the left-hand diagram don't seem to be in any meaningful order, even accounting for the fact that the cardinal directions might have been recored wrongly.

=== Transfer and Transformation of the Constellation ===
nothing known

== Mythology ==
Emory gives little contextual information about the mythological context, although he does mention (1965:<ref name=":0" /> 343) that Kautoki is believed to be the “maker of wind”.

== IAU Working Group on Star Names ==
The name was discussed and adopted by the IAU WGSN in 2026.

The IAU adopted the name Kautoki for ζ1 Lyr on 18 June 2026.
