Babylonian constellation of the Scorpion in Stellarium, painted by J.Gullberg (2021).

mulGIR2.AN.NA (𒀯𒄈𒀭𒈾) is a name for the asterism best known as mulgir2.tab = zuqaqīpu, 'The Scorpion' (Scorpio) in Ancient Mesopotamia. The most common meaning of Sumerian GIR2 is that of a sharp implement, 'knife, dagger, sword,' but the lexical tradition also gives GIR2 on its own as an abbreviation of Sumerian gir2.tab = zuqaqīpu allowing for two alternative understandings of the name: 'Sword of Heaven,' and 'Scorpion of Heaven.'

Concordance, Etymology, History

Kurtik with Hilder, Hoffmann, Horowitz, Kim

Lit. "Heavenly sword", an epithet of Scorpius [G. 93], but also see CAD Z 163 for gir2 = zuqaqīpu.
